Transformation of Functions - Lesson Plan [Show Teaching PlanOnly]

Objectives

Teaching Plan

Day 1: Single Transformations (50 Minutes)

The purpose of this lesson is to help students understand, conceptually, what it means to transform a function. It is also designed to help them learn to recognize and write single transformations.

  1. Using a computer projector demonstrate how to go to the eNLVM website, go to your school and class, and login. (10 minutes)
  2. Demonstrate how to do the first activity in the Translations section and how to move between activities. (5 minutes)
  1. Ask students to login and work through the sections, starting at the top and working to the end of the Reflections section. If students finish early, have them work on transformations-of-functions homework problems from the class textbook. (25 minutes)
  1. With 10 minutes remaining in your class, stop your students and ask them to participate in a discussion.
  • Login as a teacher on a computer and quickly view student answers to the last three activites of the warm-up section and remaining sections.
  • Go through the last three activities of the warm-up section and the remaining sections completed by the students with the class.
  • Discuss problems and student answers, giving special attention to items students had difficulty with.

Day 2: Multiple Transformations (50 Minutes)

The purpose of this lesson is to help students learn to recognize and write multiple transformations.

  1. Have a brief class discussion to review single transformations. (Optional 5-10 minutes)
  1. Ask students to login and work through the Multiple Transformations section. (15 minutes)
  1. Ask students to complete the Practice Quiz. (10 minutes)
  1. Ask students to complete the Quiz (10 minutes).
  1. Discuss the Quiz with the class. (5 minutes)

 

Note: Depending on time constraints, this lesson may be presented in one day, with the option to discuss the quiz the day following.
