eNLVM Required Software

Warning! It is not enough to test this website on your home or office computer. Test it on the computers that your students will use. Usually all of the computers in a lab are set up the same, so if you verify that the website works on one of the computers, it should work on the others in the lab.

How to Check a Computer

To verify that the eNLVM will work on a computer, visit the pages in this Browser Check lesson or go through the activities in the eNLVM lessons you have set up just as your students will.

The most common problem that teachers encounter is that when they take their students into the lab, they find that the lab computers do not have Java installed. Make sure that doesn't happen to you!

Test your lab computers a couple of weeks before you intend to take your students to the lab. That way you can ask for software to be installed if needed.

Sometimes the software installed in a lab changes (for example when the systems are rebuilt). This is why you should test your lab computers again in the morning of the day you intend to take your students to the lab. That way you can change your plans if things aren't working and avoid wasting time and frustration taking your students to the lab.

Required Software

All of the eNLVM lessons require Java, some require use Flash, a few require Shockwave and Quicktime. These are standard programs that can be safely loaded on computers. Teacher published lessons may link to websites that require other software.

Additional Software Required for Editing Activities

The eNLVM provides the FCKEditor for editing activity instructions. This editor works on Netscape and its derivatives on both Windows and Mac OSX and on IE on Windows. If you want to edit eNLVM activity instructions, get one of those browsers. All other parts of the eNLVM including the student view work in most any browser.
